97% of execs shipped AI agents. Half their staff never saw one
WRITER's 2026 survey: nearly every exec says they deployed AI agents, but only 52% of employees use one and just 29% see ROI.

97% of executives say their company deployed AI agents in the past year. Only 52% of employees report actually using one. That 45-point gap is the real story of enterprise AI in 2026 — deployment is a slide deck, adoption is a habit, and the two are not the same thing.
The ROI numbers make it worse. Just 29% of companies see significant returns, and 79% report challenges adopting AI — a double-digit jump from 2025. More than half of C-suite leaders (54%) admit AI adoption is "tearing their company apart." Meanwhile the usage split hardens at the top: 94% of the C-suite use AI tools daily versus 70% of employees, with 64% of executives clocking two-plus hours.
Leadership's answer is pressure, not enablement. 92% are cultivating an "AI elite" class of power users, and 60% plan to lay off staff who won't adopt. The incentives are already visible — AI super-users were 3x more likely to get a raise or promotion and reportedly 5x more productive. WRITER ran the study with Workplace Intelligence across 2,400 knowledge workers (1,200 executives, 1,200 employees) in the US, UK, Ireland, Benelux, France and Germany, fielded Dec 2025–Jan 2026.
Why it matters: enterprise AI's bottleneck moved from model capability to workflow adoption — and companies are trying to close it with headcount threats instead of training.
