ChatGPT's Market Share Crumbles — Down 20 Points in a Year

OpenAI's dominance is eroding fast: ChatGPT dropped from 87% to 68% web share, and below 40% on mobile as Gemini and Grok surge.

ChatGPT's Market Share Crumbles — Down 20 Points in a Year

ChatGPT has lost nearly 20 percentage points of web market share in 12 months — falling from 87.2% to 68% — the steepest drop ever recorded for a dominant tech platform this quickly.

The mobile story is worse. ChatGPT's app share collapsed from 69.1% → 45.3%, and dipped below 40% in March 2026 — four straight months of decline. Google Gemini is the main beneficiary, surging from 5.4% to 18.2% on the back of Android integration and Workspace bundling. Grok went from a rounding error (1.6%) to 15.2%, riding X's distribution.

The market isn't consolidating around a new winner — it's fragmenting. One in five AI users now rotates between apps depending on the task.

Why it matters: OpenAI no longer has a moat. Distribution — not model quality — is becoming the deciding factor, and Google and Elon have that in spades.
