Grok's AI Odyssey looks epic until the faces start melting
Musk says Grok Imagine will ship a full-length, "historically accurate" Odyssey by year's end. The demo reel disagrees.

Elon Musk is now circulating a blooper reel of his own AI epic — Odyssey-style scenes from Grok Imagine where characters lose the thread mid-sentence, faces morph between frames, and dramatic beats collapse into accidental comedy. It's a self-aware follow-up to the three-minute showreel he posted alongside a much bigger claim: that Grok will produce a full-length Odyssey that is "historically accurate and true to the art of Homer" before the end of 2026.
The showreel didn't survive contact with classicists. Spotters clocked medieval swords with ornate pommels, Roman-legionnaire helmets on Greek soldiers, sirens in modern yellow dresses, water running against the current, and a Hermes with Victoria's Secret wings. The standout: Odysseus wearing what look like modern earplugs — in Homer it's beeswax for the crew, and Odysseus himself is lashed to the mast precisely so he can hear.
The timing is awkward. xAI shipped Imagine Video 1.5 on 1 August with native 1080p at $0.25/sec, voice references, and up to seven image anchors for character consistency — real gains on the exact axes short clips are judged on. None of that solves the hard part: narrative and factual coherence across minutes, not seconds. Musk pitched this as a rebuke to Christopher Nolan's adaptation, which beat his box-office predictions.
Why it matters: video models have basically solved the eight-second clip — feature-length consistency is the next wall, and "historically accurate" is a much harder benchmark than "looks cool."
