Claude Code can design now — /design ships in research preview
Anthropic's /design command drops Claude Design's artboard workflow into the Claude Code CLI and desktop app.
Type /design a few options for {feature} in Claude Code and you get editable artboards instead of a wall of JSX. Anthropic shipped the command on 17 August 2026 as a research preview, pulling the artboard workflow out of Claude Design — the Anthropic Labs product that launched in April — and dropping it straight into the CLI and desktop app.
The pitch is the tab-switch it kills. Previously you'd mock something at claude.ai/design, then paste code back into your editor. Now Claude reads your existing codebase, matches its UI style, and renders shareable mocks as Artifacts in a side panel. Pick a favorite, tweak it, tell Claude to implement it. Engineering lead Nate Parrott framed it as a pre-build step: design first, then code.
Caveats are real for a preview. Designs have to be saved manually, style-matching depends on having a codebase worth reading, and it's gated to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Run claude update to get it. The launch landed the same week Anthropic's annualized revenue reportedly crossed $65 billion.
Why it matters: coding agents are creeping up the stack from implementation into design, where the expensive decisions actually get made.
