DeepMind Hires a Philosopher to Think About AI Consciousness
Henry Shevlin joins Google DeepMind in May to work full-time on machine consciousness, human-AI relationships, and AGI readiness.

Google DeepMind just created something unusual: a Philosopher role — that's the actual job title. Henry Shevlin, Associate Director at Cambridge's Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, starts in May and will continue his Cambridge research part-time.
His mandate covers machine consciousness, the moral status of AI systems, and AGI readiness — not safety in the conventional "prevent misuse" sense, but the deeper question of what AI systems might be experiencing and what obligations that creates. Shevlin has previously argued that the consciousness question may never be cleanly settled by empirical science alone.
By bringing this in-house, DeepMind is signaling that these aren't fringe concerns anymore — they're part of the product development loop.
Why it matters: When a frontier AI lab puts a consciousness philosopher on staff, it suggests the questions of AI moral status and human-AI relationships are close enough to matter operationally — not just academically.
