SpaceX closes its $60B Cursor buy — biggest startup deal ever

The paperwork is done. On 14 August 2026 SpaceX completed its $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Anysphere, the company behind Cursor — the largest price ever paid for a startup. Cursor becomes a wholly owned unit of the SpaceXAI division, the entity formed after SpaceX absorbed xAI in February.

This wasn't a surprise ending. The two had been jointly training models for months: Grok 4.5 shipped in July as their first co-built model, aimed at finance and legal work, and Grok 4.6 is already running inside the Cursor editor at roughly half the API price of comparable frontier models. Cursor's team now works across Grok Build, Grok Bot, Grok API and Cursor itself, with access to Colossus, SpaceX's ~200,000-GPU cluster.

What Musk actually bought isn't an editor. It's a few million professional developers, enterprise distribution he didn't have, and a continuous stream of real coding telemetry — the exact training signal that separates a good code model from a great one. Anthropic and OpenAI own the model layer; SpaceXAI just bought the surface developers type into every day.

Why it matters: the AI coding war is no longer about who has the best model — it's about who owns the editor the model runs in.
