OpenAI finally ships transparent PNGs for GPT-Image-2
GPT-Image-2 now accepts background=transparent in preview — alpha-channel assets straight from the API, no cutout step.

OpenAI flipped on transparent backgrounds for GPT-Image-2 in preview on 20 Aug. Set background: "transparent" in the Images API or the Responses API image tool and you get an alpha channel back — PNG or WebP only, since JPEG has no transparency to give. Until now GPT-Image-2 hard-errored on that parameter, and anyone who needed a cutout had to fall back to gpt-image-1.5 or bolt on a background-removal pass.
The target is obvious: product shots, logos, sticker packs, website mockups — assets meant to sit on top of something else. OpenAI shipped a cookbook for campaign and presentation assets alongside it. No pricing change announced.
"Preview" is doing real work in that sentence, though. Devs are already reporting alpha values landing at 252-254 instead of a clean 255, faint halos on edges, and RGB leak in the supposedly-empty pixels. Fine for a mockup, not fine for print or a design system where a near-opaque pixel becomes a visible seam.
Why it matters: cutting the background-removal step out of the pipeline turns image gen from a one-off toy into a real asset factory — assuming the alpha channel gets clean.
