Anthropic Rolls Out KYC Identity Checks for Claude Users
Claude now gates some features behind a government ID + selfie check via Persona Identities, citing abuse prevention and legal compliance.

Anthropic has begun rolling out identity verification for select Claude users, partnering with Persona Identities to handle the checks. Users who hit the gate must submit a physical, government-issued photo ID — passport, driver's license, or national ID card — plus a live selfie. Photocopies, digital IDs, and student cards are explicitly rejected.
The rollout is gradual. Verification prompts appear when accessing certain capabilities, during routine platform integrity checks, or when safety or compliance flags are triggered. Collected data lives with Persona, encrypted in transit and at rest, and Anthropic says it won't be used for model training or marketing.
"Being responsible with powerful technology starts with knowing who is using it," reads the support doc. The move tightens Claude's compliance layer as regulatory pressure on AI platforms grows globally — and signals a broader industry shift toward accountability infrastructure.
Why it matters: KYC on a consumer AI product is a significant precedent — if it sticks, OpenAI and Google could face pressure to follow suit.
