Mira Murati's Thinking Machines Acquires Workshop Labs
Workshop Labs, built to keep humans irreplaceable by AI, is folding into Mira Murati's Thinking Machines Lab.

Workshop Labs — a small but technically sharp team — is joining Thinking Machines Lab, Mira Murati's post-OpenAI startup co-founded with John Schulman.
Workshop Labs built what they call the first integrated private post-training & inference stack, hit best-in-class speeds for trillion-parameter model training, and shipped an end-to-end product that let anyone fine-tune a model with their own data in a few clicks. Their core thesis: AI should be shaped by individuals, not handed down from labs.
The fit with Thinking Machines is ideological as much as technical. Schulman has been talking about keeping humans competitive since 2023; Murati has consistently framed AI as a collaborator, not a replacement. Thinking Machines had already given Workshop Labs early access to Tinker, their post-training platform, before the deal closed.
Why it matters: This isn't just a talent acquisition — it's two teams with the same philosophical bet on human-centric AI merging their stacks. Thinking Machines is quietly assembling serious infrastructure.
