Netflix's new AI tab picks what to watch by mood, not genre

Netflix is testing an AI Discover tab on US TVs. You pick a mood like "Scare Me" and it updates its picks as you react to them.

Netflix has stopped asking you to pick a genre. A new AI Discover tab on its TV app starts with mood-based themes like Something Light, Scare Me, Family Movie Night and Quick Watches, each with a preview clip. Pick one and you get matching titles. Hit Something Different and you get a fresh set of themes.

The tab also learns as you use it. Netflix says an intelligence layer responds to feedback in real time and remembers the titles you rejected inside the tab, so they stop coming back. Netflix calls it a "test kitchen" for discovery ideas, and the ones that work could move into the main app.

For now it's a limited test. The tab is rolling out to English-language profiles in the US on supported TVs, with more access planned over the coming weeks. It isn't available on Kids profiles and there's no international date yet. Netflix also hasn't said which AI models power it or which TVs qualify. One hands-on report couldn't find the tab on an older Sony Bravia or on a Roku stick.

Why it matters: the hardest part of streaming is still deciding what to watch, and Netflix is trying to fix that with a recommender you can talk to as you browse.
