OpenAI Codex Now Watches Your Screen to Build Memory
Chronicle turns screen captures into persistent context so Codex always knows what you're working on — no re-explaining needed.

OpenAI's Chronicle is a new opt-in feature for Codex on macOS that runs as a background agent, periodically taking screen captures and converting them into Markdown memory files stored locally on your device.
Think of it as ambient context: Codex can now answer questions about "that error you saw earlier" or "the doc you had open last week" without you lifting a finger to explain. Screen recordings are automatically deleted after 6 hours, but the generated memories persist. It's rolling out to ChatGPT Pro subscribers as a research preview — not available yet in EU, UK, or Switzerland.
The caveats are real: memories are stored unencrypted, it burns through rate limits fast, and OpenAI explicitly flags prompt injection risk — a malicious website on screen could theoretically poison the memory. Worth knowing before you opt in.
Why it matters: This is the most direct competitor to Microsoft Recall yet — same idea, different execution, and shipping now to actual users.
