OpenAI drops $300M on Glass Imaging — its device needs eyes
OpenAI bought Glass Imaging, a camera AI startup founded by the ex-Apple engineers behind Portrait Mode, for about $300M. Its first device slips to 2027.

OpenAI has bought Glass Imaging for more than $300 million, the Wall Street Journal reports. The Los Altos startup was founded in 2019 by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, the former Apple engineers who led the team that built iPhone Portrait Mode. It had raised only about $30M, so this is a big payday. Its trick is neural image processing that learns the quirks of a specific camera and cleans up the image at capture, not in post.
The camera talent has an obvious home. OpenAI's first Jony Ive–designed device is reportedly a $200–300 smart speaker with a built-in camera and Face ID-style recognition, meant to watch what's around it and suggest things to do. Earbuds, a lamp and glasses are rumored further out. OpenAI also backed Opal, the premium webcam maker, which has since moved into AI audio hardware.
Don't expect it this year, though. OpenAI once aimed to ship before the end of 2026, but its own court filings say nothing reaches customers before end of February 2027. At best you might see an unveil in late 2026. Buying the camera team now looks like OpenAI getting ready for 2027, not rushing anything out this year.
Why it matters: OpenAI keeps buying ex-Apple hardware talent. It wants its first device to see as well as it talks.
