OpenAI sells Astra to Wall Street while rationing it at home

GPT-6 Astra now powers a Wall Street edition of ChatGPT, launched the same week demand made OpenAI pause new $200 Pro sign-ups.

OpenAI sells Astra to Wall Street while rationing it at home

OpenAI is now selling the model it can't serve fast enough to investment banks. ChatGPT for Financial Services launched on Sept 10. It runs on GPT-6 Astra and does junior-banker work: company research, financial models and pitchbooks, with granular citations that trace every figure back to its source.

The data is built in rather than bolted on. OpenAI indexes Daloopa, PitchBook, LSEG News, Crunchbase and Quartr directly, and FactSet, S&P Global, Preqin and Datasite plug in as connectors. Morgan Stanley and Evercore were design partners, and compliance teams can export workspace logs into their audit workflows. It's OpenAI's answer to Anthropic's Claude for Financial Services, which launched last year.

On the same day, OpenAI paused new sign-ups for $200/month ChatGPT Pro. Astra launched on Sept 3, and Pro users put the heaviest load on its systems. "Demand for Astra is really unprecedented," said product lead Thibault Sottiaux. Existing Pro accounts, Plus, Go, Business, Enterprise and the API are unaffected. OpenAI hasn't said when Pro sign-ups will reopen.

Why it matters: Astra is short on compute, so every new industry OpenAI sells it to competes with its own subscribers for the same GPUs.
