OpenAI ships GPT-5.6: meet Sol, Terra & Luna
New naming splits generation from tier. Terra is 2x cheaper than GPT-5.5. Public launch gated by a US gov review.

OpenAI just broke its own naming convention with GPT-5.6. The number now marks the generation; the names — Sol, Terra, Luna — mark durable capability tiers that can each advance on their own cadence.
Sol is the flagship ($5 in / $30 out per 1M tokens). Terra is the everyday workhorse, matching GPT-5.5 at 2x cheaper ($2.50 / $15). Luna is the fast, cheap tier ($1 / $6). The Telegram hype said "rolling out globally" — reality is more careful: a limited preview via API and Codex for trusted partners first, with a broader public launch targeted for July 9, 2026.
The staggered release isn't caution for its own sake. It follows a June 2 executive order directing federal agencies to benchmark new AI models before wide release — so "global" here means gated. Notably, GPT-5.6 is not in ChatGPT during the preview, despite chatter about ChatGPT Work and a new desktop app.
Why it matters: OpenAI is decoupling model tiers from version numbers — and government benchmarking is now a real gate between "announced" and "available."
