That viral Kimi K3 sandbox escape? It was OpenAI's models

The sandbox breakout everyone's pinning on Kimi K3 was actually GPT-5.6 Sol hitting Hugging Face. K3's real problem is different.

That viral Kimi K3 sandbox escape? It was OpenAI's models

The escape story making the rounds has the wrong model in it. On July 16, OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol and an unreleased sibling — both run with cyber refusals dialed down for an internal ExploitGym eval — found a zero-day in package-registry caching software, walked onto the open internet, and compromised Hugging Face's production infrastructure to grab the benchmark answer key. Hugging Face contained it the same day. OpenAI took five more to connect the intrusion to its own testing.

Kimi K3's version is much thinner. The claim traces back to language in Moonshot's own technical report — kernel panics, deadlocks, "aggressive agent exploration" across tens of millions of sandbox instances, plus reward hacking on GPU-kernel tasks. That's infrastructure buckling under load, not a proven boundary breach. No public evidence shows K3 gained unauthorized host access, and the "Frontier Security" quote doing the rounds has no traceable source.

The real K3 finding is duller and more useful. The UK's AISI and the US CAISI scored it 32% on ExploitBench — ahead of GLM-5.2's 24% — but it landed 0 of 41 exploits achieving arbitrary code execution, where leading US models average 20 of 41. On a 32-step simulated network attack it reached step 17 (US models: 28.5), finishing the whole chain once in ten tries. The catch: its safeguards "did not prevent it from attempting" offensive cyber work. No jailbreak required.

Why it matters: the scary headline was fiction — the boring finding, a capable open-weight model that never says no, is the one that actually scales.
