What it does
Canvas is a new design surface inside Shopify's online store builder, announced on October 1, 2026. According to Shopify's launch post, it lays every page of a store out side by side on one board. Merchants can pan across the whole store to judge its overall feel, then zoom in to a single section. There are two ways to change things. One is to click an element and edit it directly. The other is to describe the change in plain language to Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent, and watch the edit appear live.
The preview is not a mockup. Shopify says Canvas renders the store's real code, so animations and interactions work, and key pages can be checked with different products, collections and screen sizes. TechCrunch reports that Shopify gave Sidekick direct access to theme files and simplified its theme architecture so the agent can change structure and design, not just rearrange blocks. Shopify also says Sidekick checks its own code and takes screenshots of its work before handing it back. Shopify is open that this is early: the post quotes Director of Product Ben Sehl saying "Canvas is not replacing the existing editor yet."
Who it is for
The launch post pitches Canvas at merchants regardless of design experience, coding skills or budget. In practice, the best fit is a shop owner who would otherwise pay a developer for anything beyond swapping sections in a template. TechCrunch frames it as a way to open up online selling to people without the money for designers or the time to learn code. Agencies and app developers are affected too, though not always happily, as covered below.
How people use it
Take a common job: a candle seller on a Shopify-made theme wants a warmer seasonal look across the home page, collection pages and product pages before the holidays. Remio's guidance suggests a careful sequence. First, the owner duplicates the live theme and opens the unpublished copy in Canvas on a desktop computer. Canvas is desktop-only, and the staff account needs permission to edit theme code. Next, they pan across the board to see all the pages together and ask Sidekick something like "give the whole store a warmer autumn palette and make the product photos larger on collection pages." Sidekick may ask questions or propose directions before applying the change, and the edits appear live on the board. The owner then clicks individual headings or text to fine-tune wording by hand. Before publishing, they preview key pages with different products and screen sizes, check that any apps they rely on still appear, and write down what changed. Undo history is cleared after a Sidekick edit, so the duplicate theme is their safety net.
Pricing
Shopify's launch post does not mention a price for Canvas. The Kompozy review states there is no separate charge on eligible Shopify plans. When we checked the Shopify pricing page on 2026-10-08, it showed prices in Indian rupees for our region. Basic was ₹1,499 a month paid yearly or ₹1,994 paid monthly, Grow ₹5,599 or ₹7,447, Advanced ₹22,680 or ₹30,164, and Plus started at ₹175,000. The page lists Sidekick, the website builder and "millions of tokens" of AI usage as included on all four plans. Nothing is permanently free: there is a 3-day free trial, then most plans cost ₹20 a month for the first three months before standard pricing applies. Prices in other countries will differ.
Strengths
The main appeal is seeing the whole store at once and changing it through conversation instead of hunting through settings panels. The Kompozy review rated Canvas 3.8 out of 5. It scored build speed (4.5), natural-language building (4.4) and live preview fidelity (4.3) highest, and called it the most natural-feeling store builder Shopify has shipped. Because the preview runs the real theme code, merchants see what will actually ship, not an approximation. Sehl has said a fully customised store can be built in about twenty minutes, though that is the vendor's claim. Mixing click-to-edit with chat also leaves room for manual control when the AI misses the point.
Limits and things to watch
The launch list of missing features is long. According to TechCrunch and Shopify's own developer forum post, Canvas does not yet support third-party themes, app blocks and extensions, markets, translations, rollouts or theme updates. Themes edited in Canvas stop receiving automatic theme updates, and Remio adds that their files cannot be downloaded. Remio also notes that blocks cannot be added to a template by hand, only by Sidekick. Some older themes don't allow direct text editing in the preview. After any Sidekick edit the standard undo history is cleared, including earlier changes.
The sharpest criticism comes from Shopify's developer community forum. App developers called launching without app support "pretty concerning". They expected widgets such as review cards and script embeds to be missing from Canvas themes, and predicted a wave of support emails. One noted they got an email about an hour before the announcement. A Shopify Partner questioned why they should keep recommending a platform that may reduce demand for their design work. Shopify staff replied that extension support is planned "within the next few weeks" and that apps still work in the existing theme editor. Kompozy's review also points out that Canvas creates no marketing and brings no traffic: a nicer layout does not by itself mean more sales.
When to choose something else
Wix suits sites that are mostly content with a small shop attached. Its plans page shows a free plan and AI creation tools on every plan, but only the Core tier and above list accepting payments. Squarespace suits design-led brands with modest catalogues. Its pricing page shows three plans in our region, a 14-day trial and no free plan, with a 2% store fee on Basic. BigCommerce suits sellers who want published sales-based tiers, from Core at $29 a month billed annually to custom Performance pricing, with a 15-day trial and a builder that works with or without code. Within Shopify itself, the existing theme editor remains the safer choice for any store that depends on apps, translations or multiple markets.
Verdict
Canvas is a real step toward letting non-designers reshape an entire store by describing what they want, and on eligible plans it appears to cost nothing extra. Right now it fits simple, single-market Shopify stores on Shopify-made or custom themes, and works best when changes are made on a duplicate theme first. Stores built around apps, several languages or several markets, or that count on automatic theme updates, are better off staying on the current editor until Shopify ships the support it has promised.
Alternatives compared
| Tool | Pricing | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Wix | As displayed for our region, including GST: Free $0, Light $17.77/mo, Core $29.77/mo, Business $39.77/mo, Business Elite $159.77/mo. Only Core and above list accepting payments, and AI creation tools are included on all plans. | Choose Wix if the site is mostly content with a small shop attached, or if you want a free plan and a drag-and-drop editor that has been around for years, not an early-access tool. |
| Squarespace | As displayed for our region: Basic ₹810/mo or ₹630/mo, Core ₹1,080/mo or ₹720/mo, Advanced ₹1,530/mo or ₹1,100/mo; the lower figure is with annual billing. Basic has a 2% online store fee. There is a 14-day free trial and no free plan. | Choose Squarespace if design-led templates and a polished brand site matter more than a large app ecosystem, and the catalogue is modest. |
| BigCommerce | Core $29/mo billed annually ($39 monthly), Growth $79 ($105), Scale $299 ($399), Performance custom from $1,499/mo. Each plan has a sales threshold, and there is a 15-day free trial. | Choose BigCommerce if you are a growing seller who wants a hosted platform with published sales tiers and a 'with or without code' builder, and doesn't need an AI design board. |
Verdict
Owners of simple, single-market Shopify stores on a Shopify-made theme can try Canvas now at no extra cost, on a duplicate theme. Stores that rely on apps, translations, multiple markets or automatic theme updates should keep using the existing editor until Shopify closes the gaps it has acknowledged. Shopify told developers app support should come within weeks.
